A study published by the Health Effects Institute concluded that children exposed to vehicular pollutants experience exacerbated asthmatic episodes and develop new cases of asthma and heart irregularities. The report, due out tomorrow concludes the evidence is “strongly suggestive” that the pollutants are contributing factors in these illnesses. Most of the pollutants studied were either from cars or trucks traveling on main thoroughfares. When asked about the peer-reviewed report, the Environmental Protection Agency responded encouragingly, yet other agencies involved replied with mixed reaction. A rep from the Natural Resources Defense Council commented that is was difficult to discern the effects of these pollutants directly; similar to second-hand smoke. One more reason to park the car and get on your bike to breath easier! (Via The NY Times)
