Before I became an acupuncturist, I was a patient. I injured both of my wrists from repetitive exercise to the point of immobilization. My first inclination was: visit an acupuncturist. Without any apprehension I went in for my first visit, then second, and by the third needling session, the pain had disappeared and a range of motion had returned. Was I surprised that it worked? Not one bit. After all, acupuncture has been going strong now for over 5000 years.

The Proof is in the Pudding

Investigators use functional magnetic resonance imaging and positron emission tomography to reveal how the brain lights up when acupuncture needles are inserted into the skin. It’s fascinating to see the visual and auditory cerebral areas light up on the fMRI as needles are placed in acupuncture points associated with vision and sound. Upon removal, the area will dim again. Further studies continue to show how well acupuncture connects the sympathetic with the para-sympathetic nervous system. Many of these experiments have focused on the delivery of nerve impulses via neuro-hormones.

A Sound Investment

Are you on the side of proactive-ness or reactive-ness? For those of you trying to leverage your allowables on health care this year, consider acupuncture as an investment into your future. Studies show that preventive wellness not only saves you tons of money in the long run, it helps put a smile on your face while doing so. If you’re saving money over time because you’re living an illness free lifestyle your chances of becoming depressed will drop significantly. Spend the money up front now to be well and happy!

An Apple a Day and Acupuncture

Visit your acupuncturist once a month or at least once per seasonal change for a little tune up. Acupuncture treatments have been shown to compliment a healthy lifestyle enhancing immunity, neuro-protection, and muskulo-skeletal wellness.
